Make Your Own Heating or Cooling Packs

First decide how big you're going to make your bag. Estimate the quantity of needed materials based on the number and size of bags you want to make.

Materials:
  • rice or buckwheat
  • thread
  • microwave-safe cloth material
  • needle and or sewing machine
  • (optional) 2-3 tbs. loose aromatic herbs such as lavender, rose or chamomile.
Cut two equally sized pieces of material. Align inside-out and sew or stitch all sides, leaving a two to three inch hole in one side only. Fold the material right-side-out. Find the hole and pour in rice (or buckwheat) until two thirds full. If you're adding herbs, do it now. Make sure the receiver of the bag is not allergic to the herbs you selected. Sew the hole shut.

Safety Info: Attach a tag with these heating instructions.
  1. To heat bags, microwave them for one to two minutes only, shake the bag, repeat if it is a large bag (needs another 2 minutes).
  2. To chill store in freezer.
  3. Use Twenty minutes at a time (20 on, 20 off).
  4. People with sensitive skin should place a towel between skin and bag.
