Update from Jessica

Hey everyone! Sorry I've been out of touch, just spending some time adjusting to my new life as a parent.

My daughter, Aliyah Rose, was born September 14th and is already six weeks old! My husband and I had a wonderful experience using the Birthing Center at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, with a completely natural birth. We were excited to take our baby home the morning after she was born.

I just wanted to update everyone that I am returning to Aiyana Acupuncture next month, around Thanksgiving time. I look forward to seeing everyone soon! Stay well...

Best,

Jessica Silver

Five Easy Ways to Go Organic

From the NY Times Well blog comes 5 ways to go organic if you need to choose, and you can't go completely organic. Some is better than none, right? Here is a bit from the blog post...

"Switching to organic is tough for many families who don’t want to pay higher prices or give up their favorite foods. But by choosing organic versions of just a few foods that you eat often, you can increase the percentage of organic food in your diet without big changes to your shopping cart or your spending.

The key is to be strategic in your organic purchases. Opting for organic produce, for instance, doesn’t necessarily have a big impact, depending on what you eat. According to the Environmental Working Group, commercially-farmed fruits and vegetables vary in their levels of pesticide residue. Some vegetables, like broccoli, asparagus and onions, as well as foods with peels, such as avocados, bananas and oranges, have relatively low levels compared to other fruits and vegetables.

So how do you make your organic choices count? Pediatrician Dr. Alan Greene, whose new book “Raising Baby Green” explains how to raise a child in an environmentally-friendly way, has identified a few “strategic” organic foods that he says can make the biggest impact on the family diet. "

Here is the list of the 5 ways. See the article for more specific information.

1. Milk
2. Potatoes
3. Peanut butter
4. Ketchup
5. Apples

For a complete list of Dr. Greene’s strategic organic choices, visit Organic Rx on his website.

EPA approves new pesticide despite scientists' concerns

EPA approves new pesticide despite scientists' concerns

Chemists say methyl iodide, a neurotoxin that can mutate DNA, has 'serious potential for accidents.' But federal officials say safeguards in place are sufficient to protect farm workers and field-adjacent neighborhoods.

By Marla Cone, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer October 6, 2007

Despite the protests of more than 50 scientists, including five Nobel laureates in chemistry, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Friday approved use of a new, highly toxic fumigant, mainly for strawberry fields. The new pesticide, methyl iodide, is designed for growers, mainly in California and Florida, who need to replace methyl bromide, which has been banned under an international treaty because it damages the Earth's ozone layer.

Lead In Lipsticks: Should be avoided by pregnant women!

In my personal opinion lead containing lipstick should be avoid by all women, pregnant or not.

Aveda lipstick is made based on its companies Green Ingredient Policy. Many years ago its ad campaign went something like this "Is your lipstick good enough to eat? Ours is."

According to an ABC Report a high number of tested lipsticks contained lead which is dangerous to pregnant women because it may cause miscarriage and is dangerous to young children.

In the report I read this;

"It's unconscionable that women should have to worry about lead in lipstick," said Stacy Malkan of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

The coalition's report found that 20 of the 33 lipsticks it sent to be tested contained lead. Higher levels were found in products made by L'Oreal, Cover Girl and Christian Dior. Because there is no federal standard for lead in cosmetics, the advocacy group used the Food and Drug Administration's limits for lead in candy as a yardstick.

"We want the companies to immediately reformulate their products to get the lead out and … ultimately, really we need to change the laws and force these companies to be accountable to women's health," Malkan said.

Please tell all your family friends about this problem and to shop for lead free lip products.

Should Pregnant Women Eat More Seafood?

"For years, pregnant and nursing women have been warned to limit the amount of fish they eat, because many marine species may contain high levels of mercury, which endangers newborns and fetuses. Yesterday, however, a children’s health group challenged the conventional wisdom, advising pregnant women and nursing mothers to eat more fish so as to ensure optimal brain development in their babies.

What’s going on here? Currently, the Food and Drug Administration advises pregnant women to limit their weekly seafood consumption to no more than 12 ounces, or about two servings, per week. The newest recommendation comes from the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, a nonprofit group that focuses on childhood health issues. That group’s scientific advisors say that pregnant women and nursing mothers should eat at least 12 ounces of fish per week.

Although both recommendations acknowledge that pregnant women can safely eat about two servings a week, fears of mercury contamination in seafood have prompted many pregnant women to forgo fish entirely. And here’s the conundrum: an increasing number of studies indicate that omega-3 fatty acids, found mostly in fish, are essential to brain development in fetuses and newborns.

Earlier this year, a report in The Lancet, a medical journal, concluded that women who had eaten more than 12 ounces of fish per week during pregnancy produced better developed, more intelligent children. “Advice that limits seafood consumption might reduce the intake of nutrients necessary for optimum neurological development,” wrote scientists from the National Institutes of Health and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
“The real problem here are the women who are just eliminating fish from their diet,” said Judy Meehan, executive director of the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition. “Eating 12 ounces is a very safe, smart move, and nobody is disputing that.'’

While none of the research cited yesterday in the coalition’s recommendations has been funded by the fish industry, the coalition is using a grant from the National Fisheries Institute, a seafood industry group, to fund its educational campaign, according to Ms. Meehan.

For women who want the health benefits but worry about mercury and other toxins, the wisest course is to choose fish with the lowest levels of mercury. A recent report in The Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that the health benefits are likely greatest from such oily fish as salmon, herring and sardines — which are all generally low in mercury anyway. Among the fish to avoid are shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish, all of which may contain high levels of mercury."

Okay, so what is the take-away for pregnant women? You should eat your omega-3 fatty acids from fish in the appropriate amount, BUT you can also incorporate the following non-fish foods that contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids:

  • flax seeds
  • walnuts
  • squash
  • soybeans
  • cauliflower
  • cabbage
  • kale
  • collard greens
  • Brussels sprouts
  • dried cloves
  • mustard seeds
  • dried oregano
  • spinach
  • romaine lettuce
  • green beans
  • strawberries
  • broccoli

Happy eating!

Is Fertility as Easy as Breathing?

Many doctors, nurses, midwives, acupuncturists, herbalists and other healers understand how stress can cause many imbalances in our bodies. Breathing techniques can induce deep states of relaxation and are just one of many ways to de-stress.

Physical and emotional stress can cause an physiological shift on our body and hormones and for some women may even lead to irregular menstruation and fertility problems.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are very effective treatments for stress and fertility problems.

The New York times published a wonderful article about Dr. Sarah L. Berga who promotes the use of low tech interventions to cure infertility.

"Dr. Sarah L. Berga has devoted her career to one of the most hotly debated subjects in the fertility business: getting pregnant without costly drugs. She is one of a handful of physician-scientists exploring how chronic stress may keep some women from ovulating and how relaxation techniques may help." Read the entire article here.

Traditional fertility treatments can be extremely expensive. A single cycle of IVF could cost $10,000-$20,000. So couples are looking for other options that can possibly give them a greater chance at success. Acupuncture treatments have the potential to save you $10-15,000 which can be better spent on your new bundle of joy. Read some of our success stories.

Bush's Veto of Children's Health Care Bill

You may have already heard that President Bush decided to VETO a bill providing poor children with health care coverage. This program would have been paid for by raising the cigarette tax by 61 cents per pack. Somehow, Mr. Bush thinks that it is more important that children suffer, then to give them health care coverage. Well, John Stewart has a little something to say about that.

E. Coli Hamburger Recall

This is a press release from the City of New York.

NEW YORKERS SHOULD DISCARD ALL TOPPS HAMBURGERS
Health Department Is Investigating Two Possible Cases of E. Coli Connected to Multi-State Recall

NEW YORK CITY – October 1, 2007 – The Health Department is urging New Yorkers to throw away any Topps ground beef hamburgers due to possible E. coli contamination. Topps, the manufacturer, has recalled this product in several states including New York. If contaminated meat is consumed, the contaminating microbe – E. coli 0157:H7 – can cause severe diarrhea, as well as kidney damage or even death. The latest recall information from the USDA is available at: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/PDF/040_2007_Expanded_Recall.pdf

The New York City Health Department is investigating two possible illnesses related to this recall. The patients – a Staten Island girl and her mother – both consumed Topps hamburger, but neither case has been definitively linked to the meat through laboratory testing. The girl has been diagnosed with E. coli infection; the mother’s illness is still under investigation. To date, there are seven confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 in New York State and 25 nationwide, in association with this recall.

The Health Department is working actively with doctors and labs to identify and investigate potential E. coli cases. As a precaution, the agency advises anyone who has consumed Topps hamburgers and develops symptoms such as severe diarrhea and abdominal cramps, or blood in the stool, to contact a health care provider immediately.

As a reminder, New Yorkers can help prevent E. coli, by cooking meat thoroughly (at least 160º F for ground beef), keeping raw meats and their juices away from other foods when cooking, and washing hands regularly.

For more information on E. coli, please see http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/cd/cdecoli.shtml.
