2008 5 Boro Bike Tour is only 65 days away!

I had one of the greatest experiences last year riding in the 2007 5 Boro Bike Tour. My friends and I got to ride through so many parts of the city that a cyclist could only wish they had regular access to. Imagine being able to ride your bike straight down the BQE with no cars from Queens to Brooklyn! How about riding over the Verrazano Bridge? Done! It is extremely exhilarating that this bike tour exists, and it is "the largest recreational cycling event in America." There is no pressure at all to push yourself to go fast. You can make it a nice casual bike ride with family or friends. There are many stops along the way. The registration space is limited and fills up pretty quickly, so I highly recommend you register soon!

The ride date is Sunday, May 4, 2008. The following is a more detailed description from their website.

"Join 30,000 cyclists for the ultimate tour of this great biking town. The journey starts in Lower Manhattan. You'll head north through the heart of Manhattan to Central Park and continue on to historic Harlem and the Bronx, returning south along the East River on the FDR Drive. From there you'll cross into Queens and then Brooklyn, where cyclists take over the highway before making the thrilling climb up--and down--the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island. The route is 42 miles, mostly flat except for the bridges. When the Tour reaches Staten Island, there's a celebratory Festival at Fort Wadsworth in Gateway National Recreation Area. Relax, grab a bite to eat, check out bike-related exhibits...Once you're ready to go, you'll have three more miles to the Staten Island Ferry back to Manhattan."

Hope see you out there!

Fighting Fatigue

When we're feeling fatigued or exhausted, exercise is probably the last thing we want to do. However, it might just be the answer to boosting our energy. According to new research, regular exercise at a low-intensity may help boost energy levels in people suffering from fatigue.

In the study, those who exercised at either low or moderate intensity three times per week over six weeks had a 20 percent increase in energy levels by the end of the study, compared to the control group. However, the researchers found that more intense exercise isn’t the best way to reduce fatigue. The low-intensity group reported a 65 percent drop in feelings of fatigue, compared to a 49 percent drop in the group doing more intense exercise.

Why exercise helps reduce fatigue isn’t clear, but the researcher said his findings suggest that exercise acts directly on the central nervous system to increase energy and reduce fatigue.

Feeling tired frequently is one of the most common health complaints, and persistent fatigue can really dampen our quality of life. In Chinese Medicine, fatigue is a sign that our energy is out of balance. Specific types of qi may be depleted, deficient, blocked, or in disharmony.

In addition to treating fatigue itself, acupuncture and Chinese herbs can treat related or contributing problems. For example, insomnia, stress and anxiety, which can deplete energy very quickly, responds well treatment, as well as aches or pains that make it difficult to exercise.

We can also advise patients about aspects of their diet or other lifestyle factors that may be contributing to the fatigue.

In the meantime, if your energy is starting to drag, try taking a break for exercise! Even if you can't get to the gym, take a brisk walk outside to get your heart pumping, or even just stand up and do some stretching for 10 minutes.

The Truth About Parabens...

A few days ago I was talking to some friends over brunch and the topic of "parabens" came up. For those of you not familiar with the word, parabens are found in literally every cosmetic item we use. Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. They can be found in shampoos, deodorants, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels, personal lubricants, topical pharmaceuticals and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives in some products.

Basically, a huge percentage of the products you buy for everyday use contain some form of parabens.

In 2004 a research study reported that parabens were found in 18 out of the 20 breast tissue samples taken from breast tumors. According to Philippa Darbre, the lead researcher of the study and oncology expert at the University of Reading, in Edinburgh, the chemical form of the parabens found in 18 of the 20 tumors tested indicated that they originated from something applied to the skin, the most likely candidates being deodorants, antiperspirants, sunless tanning products, creams, or body sprays.

The end result is that while they found the parabens in the breast cancer tumors, the researchers could not definitely say that the breast cancer was because of the parabens.

My question is: "If I am washing my body and hair with parabens, shaving my legs with parabens, brushing my teeth with toothpaste that contains parabens, then putting on cream and deodorant that contain parabens, followed by a nice body spray that contains parabens... how much is too much?"

There has been a growing debate over whether or not the parabens found in underarm deodorants have any link to women and breast cancer. I have read both sides of the argument on this issue…parabens are bad/ parabens are ok... and since there have been studies that say that it is not healthy, I have chosen to take the precautionary route and try to not use products containing them. Parabens are also listed on labels as methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben and butylparaben.

There are a few companies joining the "paraben free" movement such as Burt's Bees, Jason Natural Personal Care Products, and Sephora. Hopefully others will follow suit.

Bad News for Botox

Our old friend Botox has made the news again!

The FDA issued a warning recently that both Botox (the wrinkle-specific version) and Myobloc (a competitor) have been linked to dangerous symptoms, especially in children. The drug contains botulinum toxin, which blocks nerve impulses to muscles, causing them to relax.

Several children being treated for cerebral palsy-related muscle spasms with the drug have died. Evidently, the toxin can spread beyond the injection site to other parts of the body, paralyzing or weakening the muscles used for breathing and swallowing, a potentially fatal side effect, the FDA said.

The agency warned that patients receiving a botulinum toxin injection for any reason -- cosmetic or medical -- should be told to seek immediate care if they suffer symptoms of botulism, including: difficulty swallowing or breathing, slurred speech, muscle weakness, or difficulty holding up their head.

The question we should be asking is, aren't there alternatives to Botox? Aside from the obvious risks, the substance is toxic poison, and even in small doses should be avoided whenever possible.

Need a natural alternative? The good news is that Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be extremely effective in treating many of the same conditions that Botox and Myobloc are used for, including:

and muscle spasms.

CDC: Flu vaccine matches 40 percent of season's viruses

This article from CNN has discouraging news that the flu vaccine available this season results in a pretty serious and longer flu season.

From the article: "The situation has even deteriorated since last week when the CDC said the vaccine was protective against roughly half the circulating strains. In good years, the vaccine can fend off 70 to 90 percent of flu bugs."

If you are feeling any flu-like symptoms, come on in for our flu treatment, and continue with treatment to boost your immunity so that you do not get the flu next season. Check out the hyperlinks to read articles about Chinese Medicine treatments for these two issues.

Sperm Defects Pass to Offspring.

Environmental toxins have long been known to decrease fertility in men, and as a healthcare practitioner, I have always told men to reduce their intake of alcohol and cigarettes while they are trying for pregnancy. It is important to keep the body in a strong & healthy state while trying for pregnancy because logically, the body will affect the sperm's strength & health. A recent study ups the ante on the importance of men staying away from environmental toxins. The study shows that genetic defects in sperm caused by environmental toxins can be passed down through generations.

From this article on BBC News today:

"Scientists say fathers who smoke and drink should be aware they are potentially not just damaging themselves, but also their heirs. Tests on rats showed sperm damage caused by exposure to garden chemicals remained up to four generations later. Rats exposed to it show signs of damage and overgrowth of the prostate, infertility and kidney problems. Professor Cynthia Daniels, from Rutgers University in New Jersey said: 'We need to open up our eyes and look at the evidence. My advice to young couples would be moderation. Substances that have an impact on reproduction are often also carcinogenic. If I was a young man I would not drink very heavily and not smoke two packets of cigarettes a day while I was trying to conceive a child.'"

So, take it easy on the toxins when trying to conceive. If you have any worries that your sperm might be damaged, wait at least 3 months to allow time for the potentially damaged sperm to course out of your body and for new, healthier sperm to be formed.

Also, feel free to check out my article on Men's Infertility & Chinese Medicine. Included in the article are some great tips on how you can increase your chances of producing more viable sperm.

REDUCTION OF PHTHALATES AND POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (PVC) USE: All manufacturers have been notified that by the end of 2008 juvenile products sold in any Toys“R”Us or Babies“R”Us store in the United States must be produced without the addition of phthalates that have raised concerns about infant safety.
Additionally, as we move closer to our goal of offering PVC-free products, we have already begun replacing PVC and phthalates in juvenile products manufactured exclusively for Toys“R”Us, Inc.

ELIMINATION OF NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES FROM ALL PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED EXCLUSIVELY FOR TOYS“R”US, INC. We have instructed manufacturers to immediately take steps to eliminate the use of nickel-cadmium batteries from all items manufactured exclusively for Toys“R”Us, Inc. Blue Cross Wants Data By Breaking Patient Confidentiality

EFluxMedia.com reported that, "Blue Cross, the largest health insurer of its kind in California, has asked physicians across the state to report any “material medical history” their patients didn’t mention when they applied for insurance, including “pre-existing pregnancies”, the Los Angeles Times reports. That request however has raised a lot of questions on whether disclosing that information would violate the doctor – patient confidentiality policy.

As it appears, physicians are not ready yet to respond to Blue Cross’ request: “We’re outraged that they are asking doctors to violate the sacred trust of patients to rat them out of medical information that patients would expect their doctors to handle with the utmost secrecy and confidentiality,” Dr. Richard Frankenstein, president of the California Medical Association, said to the same newspaper." Read the full report here.

Due to this request on the part of the insurance agency many patients might withhold very important information from thier healthcare provider, which could impact the level of care they receive and may even lead to complications that could have been avoided if the doctor knew about the patients true health status.

If Blue Cross asked me to give them information, without the permission of my patient, I would tell them to take a walk.

Acupuncture increases IVF success.

Acupuncture & Chinese herbs have long been used to help the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process, whether by preparing the patient during the months leading up to the transfer or when just used on the day of the transfer. As a practitioner, I have seen first-hand the aid that TCM provides in terms of increased success. Now there is a study published in the British Medical Journal further confirming what was already known for many years.

The conclusion from the study states: "Current preliminary evidence suggests that acupuncture given with embryo transfer improves rates of pregnancy and live birth among women undergoing in vitro fertilization." The actual percentages are very impressive as you can read in the article that intially sparked my interest from the Times Online:

"In British Medical Journal online, the team reports that almost all these trials reported positive findings. Taken together they showed a 65 % increase in establishment of pregnancy, an 87 % increase in continuing pregnancy, and a 91 % increase in live births."

So, if you are going through IVF or know anyone going through this difficult process, give us a call us at (212) 894.0767 to increase your chances of success!

Anti-Depressants Ineffective for Low Back Pain

Got Low Back Pain? Try Acupuncture. It Works!

A study published on January 23, 2008 by the well respected Cochrane Review showed that anti-depressants do not relieve low back pain despite the fact that about one in four primary care doctors prescribe them for such pain. The anti-depressants did however cause side-effects.

Clinical trials show that acupuncture relieves low back pain without causing side-effects. According to medicinenet.com, “In an analysis of 33 studies, published in 2005, acupuncture was found to be an effective short-term treatment for low back pain, even when compared with sham treatments using fake acupuncture”, says Eric Manheimer, MS, of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Maryland. "Our analysis suggested that the benefits of acupuncture for low back pain are not due to a placebo effect," Manheimer tells WebMD”.

Check out this video on WebMD that interviews a patient whose back pain was relieved with acupuncture.

How does it acupuncture work for back pain?
There is a saying in Chinese medicine, "Where there is pain, there is no free flow and where there is free flow there is no pain." The free flow is of Blood and Qi (pronounced "chee"). Health is when Qi and Blood flow smoothly throughout the body to nourish, heal and balance. Your practitioner at Aiyana Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs will spend a considerable amount of time with you during your first visit to discover where your Qi and Blood are stagnated or out of balance and why. The where and why are called a pattern of energetic disharmony.
The acupuncture points and herbs chosen are appropriate to balancing your unique pattern of disharmony.

Every person is different so you will be treated based upon your individual pattern. One pattern may manifest as stagnation of Qi and Blood thus inhibiting flow into or out of the painful area. A pattern common to chronic pain patients is that there is not enough Qi or Blood to circulate into the affected area which slows or inhibits healing. Therefore the treatment strategy would be to build, nourish and circulate Qi and Blood to that area. In cases of acute pain, the pattern may be excess Qi and Blood stagnation in the painful area, so your practitioner will insert needles to move out the excess, thus relieving pain. These are just a few common clinical patterns which may cause pain.

How many visits will I need?
Each patient's needs vary according to their pattern of disharmony. However, we often recommend that the patient come in for about 8 visits within a 2-3 week period. Many acute injuries only require about five to eight visits, whereas chronic pain patients will need more treatment. Most patients start to feel relief after the first or second treatment. Your acupuncturist will give you a tailored treatment plan during your first visit.

The Six Steps To Reasonable Health Care Decisions

"I guess you don't think I should take antibiotics do you?"

As an alternative health care practitioner, this is a question people sometimes ask, fully expecting me to say that I don't think they should take antibiotics. Actually, I make no categorical judgments against antibiotics. Used at the appropriate time, in the appropriate manner, antibiotics can be an absolutely crucial part of a correcting your health problem. It's important to figure out what the appropriate time and manner is for you.

The way we approach our health and well-being is based partially on the paradigm through which we view what it means to be healthy, and how we achieve health. By definition a paradigm is a pattern, model, mold, ideal, or standard. A paradigm is not made up of practices and techniques (although certain practices and techniques may seem more in alignment with particular paradigms). A paradigm is rather more like a particular way of being which structures your thoughts and actions as you view things from a particular point of view. It is a way of understanding and analyzing that defines how you view the world, - even so far as what you think is possible.

Western medicine follows protocols based on a particular paradigm about health which defines the actions, techniques and practices that it deems most successful in achieving health and welt-being.

For the most part, Western medicine prides itself on being based on the scientific method. The scientific method is generally thought to be superior to other paradigms because it purports to be objective and free of personal, subjective biases. This objectivity is assumed to give a more exact, truthful view of what's happening. In order to promote this independent view of reality, much effort goes into following procedures that protect against subjective, personal interpretation.

There is a reliance on machines and technology to assure exact measurements, accurate analysis and consistent repeatability. Diagnostic testing, technology and machine measurements are routinely trusted more than fallible human judgments. The intellect is honored above other ways of knowing because truth is seen as fixed and replicable. Analytical, linear thinking is relied upon to reach the one exact cause of a problem and, by eliminating that cause the problem, disease, or illness can be eliminated.

Disease and illness are viewed as something that is either broken and in need of being fixed, or as an invasion by some dangerous outside agent, such as bacterial or germs, which need to be eliminated. Health is defined narrowly as the absence of disease.

In order to eliminate these dangerous elements, or fix the broken part, protocols that employ the strongest, most active element, and are the most aggressive, are used to bring about the eradication of the disease as quickly as possible. Because these practices must be stronger and more aggressive than the disease they are removing, they tend to carry negative side effects that may be dangerous. The use of such cures, of course, requires a highly trained expert to administer the prescribed program.

The protocols of Western Medicine are totally congruent with this paradigm. The strongest, most active, most aggressive methods are used for eradication. The effort to win the battle in the fight over disease is a struggle for survival. Western medicine is an excellent, effective approach for emergency, life saving medicine - but these strong, active and aggressive methods are not well suited for rebuilding, recuperation and regeneration. Such intensive techniques are definitely not to be refused and abandoned because they do have an essential use in serious, emergency and life threatening situations.

What If It's Not An Emergency Or A Life Threatening Situation?
Potential problems arise, however, when such practices and techniques are used in situations that are not serious, emergency and life threatening. How can you decide when it is time for you to use such aggressive techniques?

There is a logical decision making process that you can guide yourself through as you determine the level of treatment and remedies you need in a particular circumstance. This process is not a means of self diagnosis, nor is it meant to replace the informed opinion of your trusted health care practitioners. But rather it is a set of guidelines that empower you in understanding more about the choices that you have available to you - and it is a decision making checklist to move you through different levels of treatment until you reach the point where you feel that you are safely and effectively working with your condition.

Here is an orderly sequence of actions that can be applied to health care situations which assists in safely deciding which options to chose and when to chose them.

The Six Steps To Reasonable Health Care Decisions.
1 - The process begins with the creative step of returning to the source of the problem, where self-correction can take place. During this time you can rest, sleep or meditate. It is a returning to the stillness and silence. Even emergency medical technicians are often trained to simply be in the situation when they arrive at an emergency site - if only for a second or two - before they begin to assess the situation.
2 - From this point, you can proceed in an orderly fashion through becoming informed about what's happening to you and learning the pros and cons of your available options for working with your specific condition.
3 - The next step is to begin nourishing yourself and regenerating, repatterning and rebuilding your body.
4 - Only after you have these steps in place do you look to the possibility of resolving your condition by pushing beyond the limits of your present state through stimulating or sedating.
5 - If these actions do not bring about the desired completion and integration, move into using remedies that act in a more drug-like manner overriding the current symptoms and giving the body time to be relieved of the stress of the symptoms long enough to activate and employ its own self-healing actions.
6 - The last step in the process would be to use techniques that break across your normal boundaries and flow patterns in the body. These remedies are most often toxic to the body because they directly intervene in the natural energy flow of the body. Surgery and chemotherapy are good examples of this step.

Taking All The Steps You Need - How To Help Yourself.
In a safe and complete system of care, all of these steps are addressed. If the steps are applied in sequence from the beginning to the point where the problem is resolved unnecessarily aggressive actions are avoided. Each step builds an expanding foundation of resources for the body to heal itself in the next step.

The steps are ordered according to the probability that they are likely to result in negative side effects. Surgery and chemotherapy are obviously more likely to create serious side effects than is collecting information. You set a time limit that feels comfortable for you for moving from one step to the next.

How quickly or slowly you move through the steps depends upon the actual situation, your support system, past experiences, your body of knowledge, and even your gut feelings. This creates a recognition of what your needs are for you at the time and the level of intervention needed to correct the problem.

It is not surgery or taking an antibiotic itself that is likely to cause the most harm, but rather that these more aggressive and potentially harmful actions would be used as a first step without due consideration and the support built into the proceeding steps.

By using this decision making process you can help take away the guess work, confusion, fear and the lack of power often present in health care decisions.

The Business of Being Born

An exciting new documentary by actress Ricki Lake and filmmaker Abby Epstein is now playing in select theaters! The Business of Being Born touches on a topic I've been thinking about a lot lately, which is the medicalization of the birth process.

From the synopsis:
"The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and shocking statistics about the current maternity care system. Should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potentially catastrophic medical emergency?"

With less pregnant expectant couples seeking childbirth education and the rate of cesarean surgery and other medical interventions on the rise, this film is one that shouldn't be missed. Check the website for more information including the trailer and links to more resources.
