Thumbs up to Toys "R" Us, who announced that it is instilling a stricter policy for toy makers that manufacture toys exclusively for it's store. This e-mail from the CEO explains the details.

A Message From Gerald L. Storch, Chairman and CEO, Toys"R"Us, Inc.
Dear Valued Guest,
At Toys“R”Us, Inc., kids are central to who we are and to what we do. Our commitment to their safety is non-negotiable. I wanted to share with you today some of the decisive and proactive changes we have made recently to our already rigorous quality assurance standards:
NOTIFICATION TO MANUFACTURERS OF INCREASED QUALITY ASSURANCE STANDARDS AND OVERSIGHT: We have instructed all manufacturers who produce items for Toys“R”Us, Inc. that products shipped to the company on or after March 1, 2008 must comply with strict new standards, which include:
Significantly increasing the frequency of third-party testing, including each batch of product imported to the United States by Toys“R”Us, Inc.;Ensuring all product samples submitted for testing are selected by the company’s third-party, certified laboratory; Date-coding all products;Applying a more stringent standard of 90 ppm for lead in surface coatings versus the current federal standard of 600 ppm for all products manufactured exclusively for Toys“R”Us, Inc.;Requiring substrate materials to meet a standard of 250 ppm for lead versus the company’s current standard of 600 ppm for all products manufactured exclusively for Toys“R”Us, Inc.; andUsing lead-screening equipment to conduct company auditing of all products at their point of origin and at various points in the supply chain.
REDUCTION OF PHTHALATES AND POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (PVC) USE: All manufacturers have been notified that by the end of 2008 juvenile products sold in any Toys“R”Us or Babies“R”Us store in the United States must be produced without the addition of phthalates that have raised concerns about infant safety.
Additionally, as we move closer to our goal of offering PVC-free products, we have already begun replacing PVC and phthalates in juvenile products manufactured exclusively for Toys“R”Us, Inc.
ELIMINATION OF NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES FROM ALL PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED EXCLUSIVELY FOR TOYS“R”US, INC. We have instructed manufacturers to immediately take steps to eliminate the use of nickel-cadmium batteries from all items manufactured exclusively for Toys“R”Us, Inc. This process is expected to be complete by the end of 2008.
We know that you trust and expect that we will always do the right thing when it comes to the safety of children, and we take that responsibility very seriously. At every turn, we will continue to look for ways to provide the safest shopping environment for the children and families we serve. We love kids and babies – and safety in all we do for them, and for you, is an imperative.
Sincerely,
Gerald L. Storch
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Toys"R"Us, Inc.

Baxter Pharmaceuticals have discontinued making its blood thinner Heparin because it has caused serious allergic reaction and many deaths, mostly in heart surgey patients and those undergoing kidney dialysis.
There are many other blood thinners on the market so call your prescribing doctor today to ask them to switch you onto a safer prescription for you.

EFluxMedia.com reported that, "Blue Cross, the largest health insurer of its kind in California, has asked physicians across the state to report any “material medical history” their patients didn’t mention when they applied for insurance, including “pre-existing pregnancies”, the Los Angeles Times reports. That request however has raised a lot of questions on whether disclosing that information would violate the doctor – patient confidentiality policy.
As it appears, physicians are not ready yet to respond to Blue Cross’ request: “We’re outraged that they are asking doctors to violate the sacred trust of patients to rat them out of medical information that patients would expect their doctors to handle with the utmost secrecy and confidentiality,” Dr. Richard Frankenstein, president of the California Medical Association, said to the same newspaper." Read the full report here.
Due to this request on the part of the insurance agency many patients might withhold very important information from thier healthcare provider, which could impact the level of care they receive and may even lead to complications that could have been avoided if the doctor knew about the patients true health status.
If Blue Cross asked me to give them information, without the permission of my patient, I would tell them to take a walk.

Got Low Back Pain? Try Acupuncture. It Works!
A study published on January 23, 2008 by the well respected Cochrane Review showed that anti-depressants do not relieve low back pain despite the fact that about one in four primary care doctors prescribe them for such pain. The anti-depressants did however cause side-effects.
Clinical trials show that acupuncture relieves low back pain without causing side-effects. According to medicinenet.com, “In an analysis of 33 studies, published in 2005, acupuncture was found to be an effective short-term treatment for low back pain, even when compared with sham treatments using fake acupuncture”, says Eric Manheimer, MS, of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Maryland. "Our analysis suggested that the benefits of acupuncture for low back pain are not due to a placebo effect," Manheimer tells WebMD”.
Check out this video on WebMD that interviews a patient whose back pain was relieved with acupuncture.
How does it acupuncture work for back pain?
There is a saying in Chinese medicine, "Where there is pain, there is no free flow and where there is free flow there is no pain." The free flow is of Blood and Qi (pronounced "chee"). Health is when Qi and Blood flow smoothly throughout the body to nourish, heal and balance. Your practitioner at Aiyana Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs will spend a considerable amount of time with you during your first visit to discover where your Qi and Blood are stagnated or out of balance and why. The where and why are called a pattern of energetic disharmony.
The acupuncture points and herbs chosen are appropriate to balancing your unique pattern of disharmony.
Every person is different so you will be treated based upon your individual pattern. One pattern may manifest as stagnation of Qi and Blood thus inhibiting flow into or out of the painful area. A pattern common to chronic pain patients is that there is not enough Qi or Blood to circulate into the affected area which slows or inhibits healing. Therefore the treatment strategy would be to build, nourish and circulate Qi and Blood to that area. In cases of acute pain, the pattern may be excess Qi and Blood stagnation in the painful area, so your practitioner will insert needles to move out the excess, thus relieving pain. These are just a few common clinical patterns which may cause pain.
How many visits will I need?
Each patient's needs vary according to their pattern of disharmony. However, we often recommend that the patient come in for about 8 visits within a 2-3 week period. Many acute injuries only require about five to eight visits, whereas chronic pain patients will need more treatment. Most patients start to feel relief after the first or second treatment. Your acupuncturist will give you a tailored treatment plan during your first visit.
"I guess you don't think I should take antibiotics do you?"
As an alternative health care practitioner, this is a question people sometimes ask, fully expecting me to say that I don't think they should take antibiotics. Actually, I make no categorical judgments against antibiotics. Used at the appropriate time, in the appropriate manner, antibiotics can be an absolutely crucial part of a correcting your health problem. It's important to figure out what the appropriate time and manner is for you.
The way we approach our health and well-being is based partially on the paradigm through which we view what it means to be healthy, and how we achieve health. By definition a paradigm is a pattern, model, mold, ideal, or standard. A paradigm is not made up of practices and techniques (although certain practices and techniques may seem more in alignment with particular paradigms). A paradigm is rather more like a particular way of being which structures your thoughts and actions as you view things from a particular point of view. It is a way of understanding and analyzing that defines how you view the world, - even so far as what you think is possible.
Western medicine follows protocols based on a particular paradigm about health which defines the actions, techniques and practices that it deems most successful in achieving health and welt-being.
For the most part, Western medicine prides itself on being based on the scientific method. The scientific method is generally thought to be superior to other paradigms because it purports to be objective and free of personal, subjective biases. This objectivity is assumed to give a more exact, truthful view of what's happening. In order to promote this independent view of reality, much effort goes into following procedures that protect against subjective, personal interpretation.
There is a reliance on machines and technology to assure exact measurements, accurate analysis and consistent repeatability. Diagnostic testing, technology and machine measurements are routinely trusted more than fallible human judgments. The intellect is honored above other ways of knowing because truth is seen as fixed and replicable. Analytical, linear thinking is relied upon to reach the one exact cause of a problem and, by eliminating that cause the problem, disease, or illness can be eliminated.
Disease and illness are viewed as something that is either broken and in need of being fixed, or as an invasion by some dangerous outside agent, such as bacterial or germs, which need to be eliminated. Health is defined narrowly as the absence of disease.
In order to eliminate these dangerous elements, or fix the broken part, protocols that employ the strongest, most active element, and are the most aggressive, are used to bring about the eradication of the disease as quickly as possible. Because these practices must be stronger and more aggressive than the disease they are removing, they tend to carry negative side effects that may be dangerous. The use of such cures, of course, requires a highly trained expert to administer the prescribed program.
The protocols of Western Medicine are totally congruent with this paradigm. The strongest, most active, most aggressive methods are used for eradication. The effort to win the battle in the fight over disease is a struggle for survival. Western medicine is an excellent, effective approach for emergency, life saving medicine - but these strong, active and aggressive methods are not well suited for rebuilding, recuperation and regeneration. Such intensive techniques are definitely not to be refused and abandoned because they do have an essential use in serious, emergency and life threatening situations.
An exciting new documentary by actress Ricki Lake and filmmaker Abby Epstein is now playing in select theaters! The Business of Being Born touches on a topic I've been thinking about a lot lately, which is the medicalization of the birth process.
From the synopsis:
"The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and shocking statistics about the current maternity care system. Should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potentially catastrophic medical emergency?"
With less pregnant expectant couples seeking childbirth education and the rate of cesarean surgery and other medical interventions on the rise, this film is one that shouldn't be missed. Check the website for more information including the trailer and links to more resources.
